I Don't Wanna Be

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be another person.  Now, this is not envy. It’s curiosity. What would it be like to have another person’s responsibilities?  How does someone else think, and what is their life really like? I wonder.

Some would like for you to be another person.  They’re always giving you advice to change and be like whomever.  For your own good, of course. Worse, they may try to force you into a mold they select for you.  You’re not good enough as you are because you don’t meet their appraisal of what is right. Uncomfortable.

I believe it’s honorable to aspire to good qualities we see in others, but it begs another question.  Would we express those qualities in the same way if we had them? After all, we are who we are. For better or worse, we’re stuck with that.

Such thoughts may be wasted time.  We are ourselves, and no one can make us otherwise.  But, does that mean we can never be other than our patterns right now?  Well, no. We can change our behaviors without losing ourselves. Or better, while maintaining who we are, we can become what we ought to be.  In other words, we can both be ourselves and be right.

Part of success in life is coming to terms.  We all have dreams and desires for change alongside pride in ourselves.  God made us to achieve and progress but in His image with innate gifts and abilities, as well.  Perhaps, we could better ourselves while being comfortable in our own skins. Maybe develop strengths and strengthen weaknesses without envy toward others or self-defeating feelings of inferiority.

It will be a day of freedom when we can say, “I don’t wanna be anything other than me.”
