Don't Stop
For good or ill, the past is the past. You can’t unring a bell. It’s been said, “The moving finger writes, and, having writ moves on.” As one seasoned by years, there are many things I would do differently if I could. I am haunted by the past. However, none of my musings have done anything to change the past. They can, however, change my future, and I hope, in some ways, they have.
Tomorrow is all I’ve got. There is, of course, the moment I’m in, but it is ever changing as the future becomes the present. All I can do is look ahead. It’s the nature of our lives. No reverse gear. For some people, the future is exciting. For others, it is simply unknown. Still others face it with dread. All of these are surmisings as the future means uncertainty. The future is thrilling, awesome and terrifying at once.
I don’t know what’s going to happen or like to admit it, but it is true, nonetheless. Our God knows the future, and, while we pray for discernment and revelation, many things He keeps to Himself. So, I have to trust Him and walk with Him daily to have a clue. I must have confidence that my life and times are in His hands, and that He desires the best for me. And what is best for me in the long run may not seem to be best at the time.
What will happen to me? What of those I love and the work I have given my life to? Tennyson wrote in Ulysses:
“It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are.”
I’m not proud of everything I am, but that and tomorrow are all I have. It’s all you have, as well. Paul said to forget what was behind and reach forward to lay hold on the call of God. Yesterday’s gone. Gone with the wind. Don’t fear tomorrow. Reach for it. With your hand in God’s hand.
